Fire in the Hole

In a single stroke, Pratt’s Legions are poised to strike a crippling blow against Emperor Xo, but at the cost of perhaps thousands of lives. Will you let their attack succeed, or will you manage to diffuse the elemental bomb in time?

R.I.P. Jim Roslof (1946-2011)

I somehow missed this when it happened over the weekend.  One of the pioneers of fantasy RPG artwork, Jim Roslof, passed away from cancer.  I don’t suspect any of you will have a clue who I’m talking about.  Back in the halcyon days of roleplaying games, the 1980’s, Roslof was one of a handful of artists whose work DEFINED the look and feel of 1980’s-era Dungeons and Dragons.  While his work doesn’t stand up to some of the later artists to emerge (like Keith Parkinson, who’s paintings decorated the boxes of the Everquest MMO), to those of us who were introduced to roleplaying in that period, it is far more iconic.  Roslof’s artwork, along with that of Erol Otus, Bill Willingham, and Jeff Dee IS Dungeons and Dragons to me, far moreso than Larry Elmore or, most recently, Wayne Reynolds.

I am posting a sampling of some of Jim Roslof’s more iconic images here.  Enjoy.  Rest in Peace, Mr. Roslof.

Last Call

Response to our poll to choose the next game world has been great so far.  But the time has come to make a decision.  In two weeks (April 4th), we’ll be taking it down and announcing the results formally.  So if you haven’t voted yet, get to it!

The new game will kick off this summer, most likely in July.

Unexpected Reunion

Well it seems I was the one who missed a special announcement somewhere.  Tonight’s Warlords of Aros session turned out to be a reunion of the old guard.  We see Christi often enough, but it was great to see Adam and Soks there as well.  Sorry we couldn’t offer you guys a seat at the table, but rules are rules, and we had a full house of  ten teens as it was.

Adam, if you are serious about getting the library to sponsor an adult RP game, keep plugging away at the adult services coordinator, Jennifer.  She’s been interested before, but interest does not always translate into attendance.

Oh, and for those of you interested, here’s where you can go to score a hard cover copy of the 50 Fathoms rulebook.  (The PDF is, as always, available straight from Pinnacle Entertainment Group.  Word is an Explorers Edition is in the works if you can wait that long.)

Special Announcement for Monday

We will be filming portions of this session of Warlords of Aros for our presentation at the Texas Library Association Conference in April.  Look sharp, and please let your parents know.  If they have any concerns, please have them contact Elizabeth Hanisian or myself.

On the Block

E. Gary Gygax, 1938-2008

When your friend went missing on the way to the bank, you knew there was trouble afoot in Golad.  Now you must outbid the worst of the city’s villains if you are to rescue him.  Things were going your way…until the entourage from Dis arrived.
